Stella Cardew photographed by her daughter, Emily Underwood, May 2025.

"My wartime childhood was spent in garden and field at the edge of the Kentish suburban countryside with my twin sister; always drawing, reading and playing made-up games.
My aim in painting is to re-create plainly and beautifully the objects and atmosphere of the world around me on a flat surface to hang on a wall."
